Litter Train Your Puppy

Training Puppies How to Go Potty in a Litter Box

Don't have a place for your small breed dog to go potty outside? Like to take your puppy on vaccation with you? Why not litter train your puppy?

Potty training a new puppy can be stressful. Most people choose to train their dog to go potty outside, but knowing when they have to go can be tricky at first. Outdoor training also means you need a designated space for the dog to go potty. The other concern is accidents in the house when left unattended. When the puppy has accidents in the house, it is unpleasant for everyone, including the dog.

Litter training your puppy can relieve the frustration outdoor potty training presents. Setting up the litter training box for your puppy is easy. Simply purchase a large kitty litter box, fill with dog litter to contain the smell and find the ideal location for it in your house (preferably the garage, basement or laundry room.)

Tips for Litter Training Your Puppy:

  • Introduce the puppy to the litter box slowly. Gradually introducing your puppy to new experiences is always best, and litter training is no exception. Allow the dog to stiff out the area, touch it with his paws and mouth and show him where he is supposed to go potty.
  • Make feeding time the same everyday. All day feedings may be easier on the dog’s owner, but the puppy should be able to know when to expect his food and he should be allowed to eat for roughly 20 minutes. If done consistently, this will help you time his potty habits, making it easier for you to litter train the dog.
  • Set up the puppy litter box in a comfortable spot. Puppy litter can be used much like kitty litter to train your puppy to go potty indoors. It reduces the smell, gives the dog a secure place to go potty without being disturbed and allows him to have a spot where he knows he can go without getting in trouble.
  • Keep a close watch on the puppy. When the puppy is out of his cage, he needs to be monitored closely so you can catch him when he is about to go potty and direct him to his litter box. Left unattended, the puppy will have more accidents and make the process more difficult.
  • Offer praise and reward the puppy for using the litter box. Much like kids, dogs so well with positive reinforcement. Tell him what a good dog he is when he goes potty in the litter box. Give him a treat and rub his belly when he goes to the litter box to go potty without being guided there.
  • Keep the litter box clean. The puppy will be more likely to use the litter training box if it is kept clean and fresh.

Benefits of using a dog litter training system:

Though puppies have been trained to go potty outside successfully, it is not always an option. For people with small breed dogs who live in apartments or don’t have a designated area for the dog to go potty outside, a littler box is the perfect solution. A dog little box allows then to enjoy their pet while cutting down on accidents and the smells that go along with them.

I am going to begin litter training my 10 week old min pin. We live in a highrise and she can't always get out when she wants due to my work schedule. I hope she takes to it like a champ, it will make me feel a lot better if she does.

I got my 8 1/2 week old Chihuahua a few days ago and she is doing great with the litter box! She is so smart. She holds her pee all night and as soon as she sees her litter box in the morning she races to it so she can pee.
I put the litter box in the kitchen for convince(with her toys and food, the place where she is gated in to play) but will I be able to move it in time? When I move it to a new location will she still use it?

I just got my 8 week old min pin 2 weeks ago. Since we had cats, I think it was much easier to litter train her, watching the cats use the litter. She is now fully trained, so it took only about a week and a half! This is how I did it. I watched her to make sure she didn’t have an accident (you need to have time to raise a pup). If she did, I simply put her nose in the pee smell, and gave her a light spank of the bum. I would take her to the litter (in the bathroom), then to her 'time out spot.' her time out spot was in our other bathroom so she rarely would go in there anyways. Her problem was telling us that she had to go, or knowing herself. I would take her periodically to the litter, and if she did her business I would reward her with a treat and praise.
This took patience, but very quickly she began to learn that peeing on the floor meant spanks and time out, whereas peeing in the litter meant treats. Pavlov’s experiment success...

Hope this helps!

Like it. One problem I encountered was with my long haired dog she needs a huge box so that she moves IN the box and the feces has a chance of falling in the box instead of outside. I also have to trim her backside.

I've been using puppy training pads. My Shorkie only pees on it once in a while. I praise her IMEDIATELY but then she goes again on the carpet! She just doesn't seem interested! It almost like she thinks, "Well I don't get in trouble for peeing on the carpet so I might as well go wherever I want" She does get in trouble! She just doesn't care. I will have to try an acctual box I guess. Thanks, your article really helped!

here are some tips from all the research that I've done. I haven't tried this method just yet, just got my pup today. You don't have to buy fancy litter boxes. You can make one out of a cardboard box and line it with potty pads or a trash bag so the cardboard doesn't get wet. A plastic storage box (ones for under your bed) or a crate with the top off will work as well. If your dog sprays or lift's his leg, get a litter box with a higher wall. When you are away or at night, set up an area with their crate and the litter box so they have no option to go anywhere else but the box. Make sure you give rewards. If you are still having a hard time getting them to go, purchase an attractant spray and spray the pads, new paper or litter. Also, grab some feces from outside and place in the box. They were sure to get the idea. I personally would pick one place and keep it there. Moving the box will confuse them. I hope this helps to the people that were asking questions. The key is to be patient!
